The word "Chakra" means wheel in Sanskrit.  Each of the 7 chakras represents an energy center along the spine.  When these centers are open, energy can freely flow and express it's unique song.  When blocked, we experience emotional pains, disease, and suffering.

Using the Chakra Bija Mantras, or seed sounds, as a meditation can assist us in opening up these energy centers.  Using a Mala with a corresponding gemstone for a particular chakra adds even more potency to the practice.

Begin with a comfortable meditation posture, with your spine straight to ensure a free flow of energy up the spine.  Beginning with the Root Chakra, Chant through the seed sounds, ending with a moment of silence when you reach the crown chakra.

This can be done for a few moments to center yourself, or as a Japa practice on your Mala.  As this is a powerful practice, it's recommended to start with a smaller number of repetitions, perhaps 27, and work your way up to a full Mala.

After the Japa Meditation, sit quietly for a few moments to feel the expanded energy in your chakra centers, and rest into the stillness.
